How to Prepare a Resumé

Identification

At the top of the resumé, provide your name (in bold type and slightly larger than the rest of text) your address and telephone number(s).  Fax and e-mail are also helpful. Also, remember to use an e-mail address that reads professional. FirstnameLastname@ is the standard format for an e-mail address when using it on a resumé. Do not use an e-mail address such as hotbody@soandso.com. It is NOT professional.

Summary of Qualifications

The benefit of this category is that you can sell what the employer seeks at a glance.  Rather than stating these areas of expertise in the text where they might be overlooked, it is advisable to put them near the top of the resumé where they will be seen at a glance.   (Remember, the average recruiter scans a resumé for about 8 seconds!)

Dates of Employment/Experience

The goal of this section should be to give an overview of work experience that has taught you valuable skills. In this section include:  title of position, name of organization, location of work (town and state), dates of employment and description of work responsibilities. It is appropriate to show dates if there are no large gaps.  Modern resumés show years only or month and year.  Be sure to use action words to describe your job duties, such as sold, created, processed, etc.

Education

If your most qualifying experience is education, describe it after the career objective.  If it is your only (or best) support for your career objective, give it more space than other categories.  List major subjects and relate them to the job.  Be sure to include your GPA if it is a 3.0 or higher.

Affiliations and Volunteer Activities

Stress activities that are applicable to the position sought.  Mention leadership roles and, if relevant, describe them.  Be sure to address team projects, particularly if you are or were the team leader.  Also mention any other clubs, memberships, societies and organizations that do not reveal your political or religious beliefs.  If you are an incurable “joiner,” it is appropriate to indicate you have been active in community and civic organizations and the list is available upon request.  You can also mention any academic honors, awards and/or recognitions that you have received.

References

Be sure to ask people if they would serve as your reference before you give their names out. You do not need to include your reference information on your resumé. A statement at the bottom of your resumé, “References available upon request,” is sufficient.

The Grand Finale

Send perfect, error-free copies.  Check grammar, spelling and content for mistakes BEFORE having copies made.  Use active, descriptive language and phrases rather than sentences.  Choose the same color and grade of paper for your resumé, cover letter and envelope.  Choose a conservative font (readable).  Fold carefully, add postage, mail and bring extra copies to the interview!
