Interview Checklist
Before the Interview
- Send a short letter to the person setting up the interview to thank them and confirm the date, time and place of the interview.
- Make sure you have a copy of the position description.
- Prepare a list of references (names, addresses, phone numbers).
- Make sure you have a resumé or list of your experience and training.
- Do your homework. Know the job and the agency.
- Review possible questions you may be asked.
- Practice interviewing.
- Get a good night’s sleep the night before.
- Know exactly where you need to be for the interview and how to get there.
- Get clothes ready the night before.
At the Interview
- Arrive early. (10 minutes)
- Look your best.
- Have your resume and references.
- Relax.
- Learn the names of the interviewers.
- Remember to give a firm handshake.
- Leave your personal problems at home.
- Don’t smoke.
- Don’t chew gum or candy.
- Don’t wear sunglasses.
- Don’t wear strong aftershave or perfume.
- Don’t eat onions or garlic.
- Don’t wear face jewelry (eyebrow, lip or tongue rings).
- Make a good “early impression.”
- Be clear and specific in your answers.
- Make eye contact.
- Show interest.
- Be confident but not a “know it all.”
- Smile.
- Be honest, but don’t dwell on the negative.
- Listen carefully to interviewers’ questions and take your time in answering.
- Be yourself.
- Summarize your qualifications and interest in the position before leaving the interview. Don’t sell yourself short.
- Ask when a decision will be made.
- Thank the interviewer for his/her time when you leave.
- Make sure you have correct spelling of names and addresses of interviewers.
After the interview
- Send a follow-up thank you letter.
- Personally evaluate the interview. What went right, what went wrong, what would you do differently?
